The1Faith

This Is The Faith
by: Canon Francis Ripley, pb, 6"X 9", 474 pgs.

Possibly the BEST COMPLETE Explanation of the Catholic Faith for non-Christians...and even for Catholics.

Recently a non-Christian asked me for a book that would explain Christianity starting from the basics. The obvious answer was the Bible. Or was that so obvious? Enough people over the course of history have gone to the Bible and come up with all sorts of strange Christian and non-Christian sects. Protestantism and it myriads are followed only by the Gnosticism in variety.

There's the new Catechism, but as great as it is, the Catechism is not structured to take someone from basics. In fact the first thing a non-Christian should do is pray, and the Catechism's section on prayer is at the back.

Then I cam across this fabulous book. I've never seen anything like it. Originally published in 1951 (with minor updates in 2002), the book covers in succinct but complete chapters the nature of God, the nature of man, the meaning of life, the nature of religion, the sources of Faith, the necessity of prayer, the duty of belief, the consequences of sin, the Commandments of God, the Holy Trinity, belief in Christ, the Redemption, the supremacy of the Pope, the Mystical Body of Christ, the Sacraments, the Mass, the priesthood, devotion to Mary and the Saints, what happens after death, the devotional life of a Catholic.

Each chapter begins with a very short Q&A catechism. I love the first page. It's where we all need to start.

  1. Who made you? God made me.
  2. Who is God? God is the supreme Being, who alone...
  3. Why is God called Almighty? God is called "Almighty" becasue He can do all Things...

The font is large and easy to read, and there are headings throughout that break up the content, and with the extensive Table of Contents, makes finding topics easy.

If there were three books I'd suggest you take to a deserted island it'd be The Bible, The Catechism of the Catholic Church, and THIS IS THE FAITH. (Stan Williams, Ph.D.)

Death, Judgment, Hell, Heaven
by: Rev. Martin Von Cochem, pb, 4" X 6", 223 pgs.

The Four Last Things. It has ever been the practice of the Catholic Church to recommend to her spiritual children the meditation on man's Four Last Things - death, Judgment, Heaven and Hell. The 2865 Treasures of the Church
Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2nd Edition
by The Holy See, Imp. & Joseph Cardinal Rotzinger, pb, 6" X 9", 930 pgs.

The first new compendium of Catholic doctrine regarding faith and morals in more than 400 years, the Catechism of the Catholic Church stands, in the words of Pope John Paul II, as "a sure norm for teaching the faith" and an "authentic reference text." This version has been enhanced by the addition of more than 100 pages that feature (a) an analytical INDEX translated from the Latin text; (b) a GLOSSARY of terms; (c) the decree of promulgation of the official Latin text. The Second Edition English Translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church includes the corrections promulgated by Pope John Paul II on 8 September 1997. These corrections to the English text of the Catechism of the Catholic Church were made to harmonize it with the official Latin text promulgated by Pope John Paul II on the same date.
